    Plant Spotlight: Angelonia

Why do we love this plant? With its tolerance to heat and dry conditions, Angelonia thrives through most summer gardens with little extra maintenance or care.  Who doesn't love low maintenance plants?

Plus, their small tubular flowers attract small pollinators like bees.

They're versatile! Angelonia can be massed in landscape beds or borders AND are also excellent in containers!

Need more reasons to love this plant? Angelonia naturally has a tidy growth habit, not tangling with other plants when grown in combinations.  Their blooms also last a long time, providing season-long color. No pruning or deadheading required!

There are several different varieties of Angelonia currently on the market, but you'll find theArchangel™ Angelonia Series at Babe's Blossoms again this year.  This series thrives in extreme heat and humidity with extra-large blooms on well-branched plants that resist breakage and tangling. There are 10 colors in this series.  You'll find 3 of those colors here at Babe's in 2024:  Purple (pictured at left), Raspberry & White.  Archangel Angelonia has an upright growth habit, growing 12-14 inches tall.  They make a great thriller or filler in a combination container.

If you're looking for a plant that will thrive in a hot, sunny, dry location, try Angelonia!  Plant them with Lantana, Cuphea, Portulaca (Moss Rose) and Scaevola (Fan Flower) for a colorful and heat-loving combination.

2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

Knowing your growing zone is one of the important first steps for planning a successful garden. The USDA released a brand new Plant Hardiness Zone Map in the fall of 2023, the first major update since 2012.  The 2023 map was updated using data collected from 13,412 weather stations across the U.S.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which perennial plants, shrubs and trees are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. The map is divided into zones 1a through 13b.  Zone 1a is the coldest zone and zone 13b is the warmest zone.

Zone numbers are typically listed with the descriptions of perennial plants in catalogs and other sales information produced by commercial nurseries, plant suppliers, etc.

Use this map for reference when you're planning your next landscape project to make sure the plants you want to grow are hardy enough to survive the winter in your area.  Here in Hector, MN we are located in Zone 4b.  When I am looking for perennials, shrubs or trees to grow in my gardens, I always make sure they are listed at Zone 4 hardiness.
