Plant Spotlight: Begonia

If I had to pick a favorite annual plant, it would be Begonias and here’s why:

This plant is LOW-MAINTENANCE! I repeat, this plant is low-maintenance! Do you regularly forget to water your flower pots? This plant is for you! It is totally fine with drying out between watering. It does not require crazy amounts of fertilizer either. In fact, I don’t think I fertilized mine at all last summer and they looked gorgeous right up to freezing temps. Begonias handle stressful growing conditions, such as extreme heat, very well. The flowers just keep on coming, with absolutely no deadheading required.

This plant is versatile! It will grow well in shade, part sun or full sun. I have personally tried it in all 3 situations and it performed beautifully. It does well in containers, in the ground and in hanging baskets! Again, I have personally tried growing it in all 3 and I have never been disappointed. It mixes well with many other annuals (coleus is my favorite to mix it with), but my favorite way to grow it is in mass plantings all by itself. I guarantee you it will make a BIG impact in mass plantings in the landscape or in containers for the entire growing season.

My top 3 favorite begonia varieties that we grow and offer here at Babe’s Blossoms include “Dragon Wing”, “Big” and “Viking”. Between these 3 varieties, you’ll find a beautiful selection of plants with green or bronze foliage and different shades of pinks, reds and white that are sure to stand out and make your neighbors jealous. I hope you’re ready to jump on the begonia bandwagon with me this spring!

2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

Knowing your growing zone is one of the important first steps for planning a successful garden. The USDA released a brand new Plant Hardiness Zone Map in the fall of 2023, the first major update since 2012.  The 2023 map was updated using data collected from 13,412 weather stations across the U.S.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which perennial plants, shrubs and trees are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. The map is divided into zones 1a through 13b.  Zone 1a is the coldest zone and zone 13b is the warmest zone.

Zone numbers are typically listed with the descriptions of perennial plants in catalogs and other sales information produced by commercial nurseries, plant suppliers, etc.

Use this map for reference when you're planning your next landscape project to make sure the plants you want to grow are hardy enough to survive the winter in your area.  Here in Hector, MN we are located in Zone 4b.  When I am looking for perennials, shrubs or trees to grow in my gardens, I always make sure they are listed at Zone 4 hardiness.
